Deb's Desk: Summer Fashion

Hey, style child.

Summer is a great time to experiment with patterns, new cocktail recipes, and going on blind dates. Today, we’ll be focusing on the new patterns part. Since it’s 9 million degrees out there, everyone is legally authorized to shed their pelts and show a little more skin. It’s the perfect time to dust off your pile of patterns now that they won’t read as dramatic or overbearing. So, Deb selected three, popular patterns for summer that are really easy to mix and match without looking like you got dressed in the pitch black of the witching hour. But, before you mix, you’ve got to stop, collaborate, and listen to DWJ's guide to florals, dots, and stripes.

Practice safe mixing, okurrr?

We recommend sticking to a solid color and white, or black and white and one solid. This will make mixing really easy.

Consider the scale of a pattern when mixing. You can mix on a micro, also known as a “dainty” or “romantic” scale, or head in the opposite direction with a more exaggerated and dramatic scale. Everyone loves a little summer drama! *Let’s keep it in the wardrobe and the theater, please.*

Mix positive and negative. Pair dark ground with a light ground or black on white and white on black. This makes for a fun mix that connects the dots in an edgy way. Look at you with your wordplay and trendsetting.

Stripes scare a lot of people. I’m one of these scaredy cats. On a blessed stripe day, I’m a svelte, Parisian mime. On a fateful stripe day, I’m Mr. Smee’s sister. This said horizontal stripes are best served in small doses.

If you absolutely must wear a head-to-toe stripe, then go vertical, for the love of Pete. Vertical is elongating and has this wonderful way of making you look like a tall, slim candy cane (re Bridget, our flaxen and goodnatured wholesale intern). The only other option for head-to-toe stripes is a mix of vertical and horizontal with different pieces of clothing. If you are a novice summer styler with striping, perhaps save this technique for 2019.

No one wants to feel like they’re wearing an inmate costume from Party City. A striped t-shirt is great because it doesn’t overwhelm the figure. If you want to look a little tomboy-cool, sailor-inspired, go for a baby tee in a horizontal stripe (re Haley, our dedicated brunette dudette, retail intern).

This season is giving us elements of boho meets 80’s-inspired with baby florals and little daisies. Graphics, like dots and stripes, are also hot, hot, hot. There’s a sort of romantic feeling with the techniques used in the pattern, as well, like pen and ink, painterly florals, dots scattered over pintuck fabric. No better time than summertime for romantic dressing, like strawberry wine and seventeen…

No need to get complicated with silhouettes, because we want the pattern to be the star (and you too, of course). These looks come at varying price points, so you too can own them. That’s exactly why we dressed our interns in Forever 21 and H&M pieces because they’re interns and girls gotta eat. The cool thing about fashion is that we can all keep killing the game, even if you’re the Little Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe. Plus, SCOUT has your back with bags and accessories in florals, dots, and stripes. Now go forth and remember, you can DO.
